Interactive Project

Audience/ Purpose:

The intended primary audience for this project are graduating college students or older adults who want to take a gap year to travel and have fun. This is meant for adults who did not have the opportunity or the means to take a gap year, or for those who just graduated from college and want to take a break before they enter the workforce. The Story Map presents a tour that goes through South East Asia and not only presents fun places to visit, but also historically interesting places that could interest a variety of people. This could also be interesting for people that want a quick review of what occurred in Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father (Season 1). This could be useful as a quick refresh before watching the other seasons, or before watching one of Jack Whitehall’s comedy specials.

Image(s):

The main feature of this project is the ability to follow the locations on the map in order of locations visited by the duo on their travels to South East Asia. The project also includes a caption on each slide that describes what they did at each location, what places they visited, and whom they met. In addition, each slide has an image that provides some insight into whom the people are, what the places look like, and overall what to expect from each place. The compilation of all of these features effectively conveys the message to the audience as it provides a description and detailing of the places and the things that can be done.

Process:

In order to create this project, I first went through every episode, checking the locations and what they did. Then I went online looking for pictures that would help in portraying each of the locations or actions. Then these images were uploaded to Flickr to make it easier to embed the images. The next step was looking for exact locations or the cities where the events took place. For some of the places, it was hard to find an exact location for places where only the store name was given and nothing else. For these places, only the city was used to pinpoint the location. Then all of these aspects were compiled on the Story Map. Lastly, the marker images were changed to show the way of travel for each location.

Learning:

From working on this assignment, I learned how to add locations to Story Maps. I also learned that the more accurate the location, the better it is at showing the narrative. I also learned to add different places with different markers for each location. One thing I had trouble with in the beginning was changing the markers, but after a few tries, I learned that first you upload the image, and then you have to select it. Another thing I learned while making this project was to upload images to Flickr to use it as a database and make it easier to get a link for each image.
