final image

Updated: May 31, 2022

My primary audience are middle-aged adults with at least some interest in the environment and the effects human actions have on the environment. This is for adults who are interested in learning about how pollution from cars and factories has a rather large effect on the ocean and its living organisms. The aim is to make people aware of the harmful effects pollution has on the ocean. In addition, these people should feel concerned about how detrimental pollution is to algae and fish. The primary audience is middle-aged adults because they should be somewhat aware of what pollution is. Therefore, the purpose of the image is to bring awareness to how the process is interconnected to pollution and the death of algae, and the decrease in the fish population.

One of the main features of the image is the off-centered lightbulb. The inside of the lightbulb consists of a rocky floor with algae. Then there are many fishes swimming inside the bulb. In contrast, the surrounding background is of the ocean with garbage floating around it. This is meant to demonstrate a contrast between a good marine environment with a multitude of fishes and of algae and a polluted marine environment. The image tends to have muted colors inside the lightbulb to show that that type is slowly ceasing to exist in our world. In contrast, the polluted ocean is much more vibrant to signify that it is much more of reality to us than the lightbulb is. I finished the image with a texturizing filter in order to give the image almost a postcard feel to it and give it a softer look.

First, I started with the image of a light bulb. Then I removed the inner parts by using the clone stamp tool. Then I added the water and applied a mask. Then, with the brush tool, I used white and black to focus the water inside the lightbulb. Then I inserted an image of rocks and algae and once again used the mask and brush tool to place them inside the lightbulb. Then I inserted the images of the fish, which I quick selected from a separate image. Then I flipped some of the fish to make them appear as if they are swimming in different directions. For all the layers except the lightbulb, I changed the setting to multiply so that it would be a bit transparent. Then I merged this and added the background image to the back. Then I moved the lightbulb around so that it would be off-center as if it was barely floating into the image. Then I added a shadow under the bulb by using the Elliptical Marquee Tool to create a circle under the bulb and fill it with black, and then I added a Gaussian Blur with a lower opacity. To finish the image, I moved the bulb a bit, so the water lines would line up a bit with the background’s water lines. In addition, I moved the color balance curves to make both images match slightly in lighting. Finally, I added a Texturizer Filter to finish the image.

From working on this project, I learned how to navigate Photoshop. I learned how to section areas on one layer and then transfer them into another layer. In addition, I learned how to clip images not only to words but also to areas or shapes. I also learned how to quick select objects from other images and then insert them into the main image. Then I can place a mask on top and then use the brush tool to delete and blend out the object better simply by using black or white ink. I also learned how to apply layers and mess with the color and saturation levels to make the image appear brighter or darker, depending on the mood that the image is meant to convey.

In the next project, I will probably look for tutorials that will directly transfer to the final draft I want to convey. By doing this for this project, I got to practice and get more experience in how I wanted to place things or blend the image together. Something I will do differently is practice more with the basics because there are things like quick selection which should be more specific and detailed which were difficult to do patiently for small details.
